Churches
There are a lot of
ancient sights in the city
which are widely visited
by tourists. They include
numerous churches,
cathedrals, monasteries,
chapels, and fortresses.
One of the most interesting sights in
Minsk is the Cathedral of Saint Virgin
Mary. It is an amazingly beautiful
building of baroque style. This Roman
Catholic cathedral appeared in 1710
but was later destroyed and rebuilt. It
used to be a church of the Jesuit
monastery.

Next tourist attraction in Minsk is
the Church of Holy Trinity. It is also
called Saint Roch on the Golden Hill.
It’s a Roman Catholic church, which
dates back to the 15th century. It used
to be a wooden church but now it’s
made of white stone. The church was
fully renovated in 1983.

Saint Elisabeth
Convent is another
landmark of the city.
It is a female.
Orthodox monastery on the outskirts
of Minsk. At the moment it’s the only
functioning monastery in the city.
Church of Saints Simon and
Helena
The reasons for building this temple
were sad. Several years earlier, two
children of Vajnilovich – a son Simon
and a daughter Helena died. The
grieving father wanted to perpetuate
the memory of his children. He
decided to contribute to a building of
a church devoted to their patron
saints.

The temple was built in the Neo
Romanesque style with elements of
Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau. Due to
the fact that it was totally built of red
brick, the citizens became to call it the
Red Church.Two smaller towers are
constructed in the memory of Simon
and Helena, the third one is
comparatively high and symbolizes the
parents’ sorrow.

Now Minsk is a beautiful green city
with wide streets and modern
architecture. The most famous sights are
the National Library, the railway station,
the Red Church in Nezavisimosti
(Independence) Square, and Troitskoye
Predmestye (the Trinity Suburb). The
centre of the city can be explored on
foot, but it’s more convenient to use
public transport or a taxi to get around.
A lot of international events, such as
sports competitions, concerts and art
festivals, are held in Minsk, so the city
is visited by thousands of tourists.
